Our Epagneuls Bretons
(Called "French Brittanys" but correctly named Epagneul Breton)
Basically the Epagneul Breton is the Brittany...it is only in the USA and Canada that there is a discrimination against black pigmentation (mostly due to preference and misunderstandings over many years). And while Roans and ticking patterns have always been present in the breed, there is a tendency to select away from these patterns in much of the USA with exhibitors often struggling with getting a look by the judge. Roan & ticking is very popular and much desired in France to help maintain pigmentation where it is heavily penalized for lack of nose color (butterfly nose) or lip color, and dogs are disqualified if they have no eye patches or any white spot on the ear. Black pigment is slower in migrating to the distal body regions. For this reason you will often see more Black pigmented noses slower at filling in, might be a reason why the French focus on Roans to circumvent this problem.
I do not have many UKC events in my part of the country open to EB and so participate in AKC hunt tests and Field trials, and I have shown in IABCA events which use the FCI breed standard 95 as well as shows in Mexico where they are an FCI member country. Recently (since 2005) the Club de l'Epagneul Breton du Quebec, Inc. has stated to hold events under FCI regulations and classifications in conjunction with the Canine Federation of Canada the other legally recognized animal registry.
Otherwise the two breeds are pretty similar at least in working traits, temperament, and trainability. Some strains of imported dogs have a definite flat quartering pattern that is highly desirable, but buy all means this is not as set a trait as some would have you think. Patterns can vary widely and it is the training and rapport that the dog and handler have as a team that can make the difference. Its the looks and the genetics that can be very dissimilar. Same genetic origins, but looking very different ! ! !
Be sure that whomever you get a dog from has been checking for health issues and have them recorded with one of the major health database registries like OFA, Canine Eye Registry Foundation, where you as a potential buyer can verify that the information is correct as advertised.
